words of wisdom 51

Life is a perinnially beffling, insoluble enigma. We
have gathered enough of bricks but have no time to
erect an edifice which shelters us. We continue to
collect more and more bricks and continue the art of
construction. So the scorching heat of the sun
continues. The modern-disease of materialism does not
spare children also. Now a modern child is more in
love with TV than with her mummy. The child says she
can survive without mother but not without TV. Filial
love has vanished from the hearts of the most of the
modern sons and daughters. All parental affection has
disappeared (exceptions apart). Only the infection of
'idiot-box' remains.

There is no proper diagnosis of the modern man's
psychic disease. What is astonishing is his
unwillingness to approach the doctor. He blissfully
wants to continue as a patient. This is, exactly, the
reason why the modern man, though surrounded by a bevy
of beauties whose faces are more lovely than the
monarch of the sky, though rolling on the soft bed of
reputation, though gets garlanded and incurably falls
in love with his own face on TV, though enviably
occupies a high pedestal of power, though his riches
rush onward like a roaring stream, though gets buried
under the heap of encomiums and though, in a
word, becomes an inexhaustible source of jealousy for
other, in the deep, silent depths of his heart,
experiences excriciating pain, sheds many invisible
tears; discontent, restlessness - restlesly knock on
the 'inverted bowls of bone, we call skulls,' gets
shrivelled up into inner loneliness and then there
begins the deadly dance of disenchantment on his
furrowed face which is ocassionally beautified by
synthetic smiles, stemming from celluloid contraction
of lips.

Dismantled dreams, like splinters of glass, pierce
into the psychic-flesh; blood unendingly oozes,
refusing to coagulate. All his efforts to drown his
sorrow in wine and women prove to be futile. Raging
frustration threatens his sanity.

Modern man's tentative, apparent coolness is like the
lull before the storm, or the ominious silnce before
eruption. Blueness of the sea and the sky decieve
him. In an effort to filter the blueness of the sea
he finds himself in the jaws of the sharks.

Thus, his loneliness continues, restlessness
continues; spiritual barenness continues; but his
dreams do not cease. With tear-filled eyes, he
unsuccesfully collects the broken-pieces of his dreams
and piously hopes that the tantalizing 'tomorrow'
cements them. A thousand tomorrows roll by. We still
find him hanging his embroidered hopes on the peg
without credulous trust in tomorrow. Nothing has
deceived him so much as 'tomorrow' did. But
ironically nothing commands so much respect from him
as 'tomorrow' does.

SPIRITUAL QUOTES FROM A MASTER

Good book teaches us how to be good at the art of
living. They heal the inner wounds of our life and
prevent us from 'falling upon the thorns of life'. If
one wants to dethrone discontenment from one's life
this seems to be the best way.

Bees not only have stings but also the vocal strings
which can sing. So are our adversities. One should
know the art of taking advantage of adversity. For
instance, some 'bee-keepers' have the skill of tending
hives without getting stung. 'They seldom put their
veils of their faces or wear protective clothing, yet
they can go from hive to hive and still escape
unharmed. The explanation for this is simple. They
remain calm and deliberate in their movements. Even
though a bee comes directly towards them or settles on
their exposed skin, they make no effort to protect
themselves.'

Likewise, how one faces difficulties in life is
extremely important.

Many of us have been in similiar situations, for
troubles seldom come one at a time Instead, they buzz
around and threaten us from all sides. If we fret and
rebel under testing, we aggravate our problems and are
sure to feel the pain of defeat. On the other hand,
calmly expressing our faith in God through praise and
prayer will bring us the sweetness of new grace and
power.

When the bees of adversity descend on you, don't
panic. Calmly trust the Lord. Then you will escape
the stings of worry and realize the joy of victory!!

words of wisdom 49

Death is painful but an inevitable dramatic
requirement of "Cosmic-play". "Every calamity bring
with itself an unseen spritual compensation."

One may question "Why does Death exist?" The right
answer would be that death is there because God wants
to enhance the beauty of life. Though paradoxical,
death is the only Cosmic and cosmetic brush that
beautifies life. God has given us sorrow only to
deepen our joy. Though unbelievable, sorrow is the
only potent apparatus that enlarges the horizons of
happiness.

It is wrong to say that one dies. One should say that
he or she dies into life. Death is the door to
immortality. Death is in no way inferior to birth.
The very process of living is the process of dying.
We die while living; we are in love with life while
dying.

Life is not just the birth - sorrow - and death as it
is wrongly supposed to be; life is the birth -birth
into bliss - death into life.

We must weep over the dead man, not because he is dead
but because we are still alive; and not yet dead.

EVERY TIME ONE DOOR CLOSES, ANOTHER DOOR OPENS.
EVERY SUNSET IS A MOVE CLOSER TO SUNRISE. DEATH IS
ALWAYS THE PRELUDE TO RESURRECTION.

Thus to put everything in a nutsheel, death is a
Cosmically induced attempt to recapture childhood.
The spiritual heights one has scaled depend on how
happily one embraces death. Let us take a glance at
the one who prepares for sleep. He first lays out his
bed and then he lies upon it, blissfully forgetting
the world and awaiting the tender fingers of sleep to
touch his eyelids. Despite knowing fully well that
sleep will take away the world of wakeful state and
that he will be hurled into a strange world of dreams,
one prepares for the unimaginable, unknown to escape
the agonizing fatige of the day.

Like the one happily preparing for sleep one must
prepare for death. Death is like the drop of dew
vanishing from the petal of rose; death is like the
rose fading away to fall into the dust below.

If death takes away happiness, it also takes away
sorrow, if it extinguishes the flame of joy; it also
lights the flame of hope. Death reveals us that there
is life beyond it, just like there was life before it.

Just as the gardener waters both the rose flower and
the thorns, so also God's Grace is felt both in birth
and death. Both are equally potential transcendental
instruments in understanding the non-dualistic essence
of life.

words of wisdom 48

Whatsoever you are doing - walking, sitting, eating,
or if you are not doing anything, just breathing,
resting, in the grass - never forget that you are a
watcher.

You will forget it again and again. You will get
involved in some thought, some feeling, some emotion,
some sentiment - anything will distract you from the
watcher. Remember, and run back to your center of
watching.

Make it an inner process, continously ... you will be
surprised at how life changes its whole quality. I
can move my hand without any watchfulness, and I can
also move my hand absolutely watching from inside the
whole movememnt. The movements are totally different.
The first movement is a robot movememnt, mechanical.
The second movement is a conscious movement. And when
you are conscious, you feel that hand from within;
when you are not conscious, you only know the hand
from without.

You have know your face only in the mirror, from the
without, because you are not a watcher. If you start
watching, you will feel your face from within - and
that is such an experience, to watch yourself from
within. Then slowly, strange things start happening.
Thoughts disappear, feelings disappear, emotions
disappear, and there is a silence surrounding you.
You are just like an isand in the middle of the ocean
of silence ... just a watcher, as if a flame of light
is at the center of your being, radiating the whole of
your being.

In the beginning it will only be an inner experience.
Slowly you will see that radiation spreading out of
your body, those rays reaching other people. You will
be surprised and shocked that other people, if they
are a little bit sensitive, will immediately become
aware that something has touched them , which was not
visisble. For example, if you are watching yourself,
just walk behind somebody, watching yourself, and it
is almost certain the person will turn and look back
suddenly, for no reason. When you are watching
yourself, you watchfulness starts radiating, and it is
bound to touch the person who is ahead of you. And if
he touched by something that is invisible, he is going
to look back : "what is the matter?" And you are so
away you cannot even touch him with your hand.

You can try an experiment; somebody is sleeping and
you can sit by their side, just watching yourself, and
the person will suddenly wake up, open his eyes, and
look all around as if somebody has touched him.

Slowly you will also become able to feel the touch
through the rays. That is what is called the vibe.
It is not a nonexistential thing. The other person
feels it; you wil also feel that you have touched the
other person.

The English term, being 'touched', is used very
significantly. You may without understanding what it
means when you say 'i was touched' by the person. He
may not have said a single word to you. He may just
have passed by. He may just have looked once at your
eyes, and "touched" by the person. He may not have
said a single word to you. He may just have passed
by. He may just have looked once at your eyes, and
you feel "touched" by the person. It is not just a
word- it actually happens. And then those rays go on
spreading to people, to animals, to trees, to rocks
... and one day you will, you are touching the whole
universe from within.

words of wisdom 47

Each action that you do, or even think about has is
own ways of persisting again and again, because it
creates a channel in your being. It starts absorbing
energy from you. You are angry, and then you think
you are angry no more - then you miss the point. When
the mood has gone, nothing has happened; only the
wheel has moved and the spoke that was up has gone
down.

The anger was there on the surface a few minutes ago;
the anger has now gone down into the unconscious, into
the depth of your being. It will wait for its time to
come again. If you have acted according to it, you
have renforced it. Then you have again given a lease
for its life. You have given it again a power, an
energy. It is throbbing lke a seed under the soil,
waiting for the right opportunity and season, then it
will sprout.

Every action is self-perpeutating, every thought is
self-perpeutating. Once you cooperate with it you are
giving energy to it. Sooner or later it will become
habitual.

You will do it but you will not be the doer; you will
do it just because of the force of habit. People say
habit is second - this is not exagerration. On the
contrary this is an understatement! Infact habit
finally become first nature and nature becomes
secondary. Nature becomes just like an appendix or
footnotes in a book, and habit becomes the main body
of the book.

You live through the habit - that means that habit
lives through you basically. The habit itself
persists, it has an energy of its own. of course it
takes the energy from you, but you coperated with it
in the past and you are coperating in the present. By
and by the habit will become the master and you will
be just a servant, a shadow. The habit will give the
commandment and you will be just an obedient servant.
You will have to follow it.

It is within you. Sometimes, suddenly saddness comes
for no apparent reason at all. And sometimes one feels
happy, sometimes one feels euphoric, ecstatic. A man
deprived of all social relationships, isolated in
total comfort, supplied with every need, moves through
all the mood that you move through in relationship.
That means something comes from within, and you hang
it on somebody else. That is just a rationalization.

You feel good, you feel bad, and these feelings are
bubbling from your own unconsciouness, from you own
past. Nobody can make you angry, and nobody can make
you happy. You becomes happy on your own, you become
angry on your own, and you become sad on your own.
Unless you realize this, you will always remain a
slave.

The mastery of one's self comes when one realizes, "I
am absolutely responsible for whatsoever happens to
me, Whatsoever happens, unconditionally - I am
absoltely responsible."

The Newsmaker – Interview

Excerpts from tete a tete with Harry Johal of The Newsmaker

Suresh Krissna is one of the most successful and renowned filmmaker from south. Associated with some highly successful movies in South with stars like Kamal Haasan, Rajnikant, Chiranjeevi, Mohan Lal to mention a few. In a long distance Set of questions Harry Johal got this opportunity to bring out Media shy personality to speak, about his personal and professional achievements. Here we bring Suresh Krissna very true to his Soul as a person as a genius and as a NEWSMAKER Director

Q When you look back at your career do you feel you have reached where you belonged?

To be honest, I never even imagined I would be in films Directing Movies. That the South Indian Audiences, producers and actors are still tolerating me even after 15years and over 30 films in itself truly lucky and Gods Grace. Every film I get I keep thanking my stars, for still I do not know what I am doing in films, and that too Direction.

Q Where you began your journey as a Director? Your earlier days about your first break?

Everything in my career happened all of a sudden. Nothing was ever planned. I never had any distinct goal in my life right from my school days back in Bombay. It just happened. I passed my school exams from General Education Academy, Chembur, Bombay because my elder brother, Sriram was always a year ahead of me, brilliant and I always had his books and notes for me to copy. Later just because he took to Commerce in College I too took it for I knew his books would be available. Because he was brilliant he got into Chartered Accountancy etc and that was not my cup of tea. For me the whole education period was a tense period. Luckily I was in the last batch of the old course in school and college, hence the university never wanted these old batch and made sure we got through, thus helping me immensely and giving me my B.Com.Degree, from Bombay University. One friend Mr.K.R.Parmeshwar who was directing stage plays met me and asked if I was interested in assisting him for his plays. I had no clue of drama but then the temptation of Rs.25/- as pocket money made me agree. And there I was working in backstage various plays in Tamil, Marathi, Kannada, and Gujrati also doing a diploma course in Natya Academy affiliated to UNESCO Paris learning theater. Then came a job as an accountant in ShriL.V.Prasadji’s Bombay office. I accepted for my parents were wondering what I was doing in Drama. Luckily within a year there was a vacancy for assistant director and me getting bored with this accounts jumped there and now as Prasadji’s assistant I was roaming with him all over, seriously not knowing anything about this job. There was this film EK DUUJE KE LIYE Produced by Prasadji and directed by K.Balachanderji. As Balachanderji wanted somebody who knew both Tamil and Hindi I was asked to be accompany him and I did the escort job perfectly. When Balachanderji called me for working in the film I happily opted for it meant travelling. Then it was a 7 years stint with Balachanderji down south in all his south films in 14 films and very soon becoming his Associate Director. Most of Balachanderji’s film had Kamal Hasan as the hero and I became very friendly with him. And very soon he probably found that I was picking up the job fast and one day offered me my first film “SATHYA” a remake of Arjun Hindi. Luckily the film became a hit and was for many a trendsetter and there you are in the year 1986-87 this lucky director was born.

Q who are the people you feel have contributed to position where you are today, Apart from professional friends?

At first my parents for they never questioned what I wanted to do in my life. I think with the kind of education and changing profession from drama to accountancy to cinema, I think that they left my future in God’s Hands. My childhood friends Arun and Vanesh were a great source of encouragement because they too were drifters like me. Haha! My brothers Sriram and Satish were always and are still keen followers of my career and a great source of encouragement. Shri.Ananthuji, who is no more, a great soul, though a writer to ShriK.Balachander was almost a father-like figure for me from the time I landed in the world of cinema. After marriage my wife Chandra, who also worked as my assistant director in lot of films is a wonderful critic and a constant source of encouragement and inspiration, so also my brother-in-law Murali a great friend.

Q what sort of cinema you feel comfortable wit? True to life movies or masala kind of movies?

I feel I am a tailor who stitches as per the requirement of the producer, the script, the stars or the audience demands. Personally ‘I may like Guru Dutts “Pyaasa” or Raj Kapoor’s “Mera Naam Joker” or Jack Nicholson’s “One Flew over the cuckoo’s nest”, but then the kind of films that I am offered is what I do. Probably If Produce and Direct films then probably I think I could take the subjects of my choice. Right now I have had success with mass films with Mr.Rajnikant in “Annamalai”, ‘Veera’,”Baasha” and with Mr. Kamal Hasan in “Sathya” “Indrudu chandrudu” and with Mr.Chiranjeevi in “Master” “Daddy” and some others and with small films like “Prema” “Aaha” I have won a few awards too, Hence I believe I am comfortable with both kind of films. I try honestly even in the masala movie make it near to real life.

Q Any new arena you want to explore? If so please put few words.

Period Film, Mythological Films and films on real life Heroes a sort of Documentary. There are so many unsung heroes I would like to tell the world about them and through that lets all be inspired.

Q Why directors down south are unable to repeat the success, in Hindi speaking belt, they tasted in 80s leaving exceptions like Ram Gopal Verma and to an extent Mani Rathnam?

The south films, say in Tamil or Malayalam were always daring in their subjects and would make films which a Hindi audience would never like it. Great filmmakers like K.Balachander, Bharathi Raja, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Sibi Malayil, Fazil and many other trend setting writers and directors have fed the south audience with absolute different fares in their cinemas. Hence the need for the directors down south to keep on making films with all the entertainment but in a very different mould. Hence most of the films by south film directors trying to remake their films never succeeded because the Hindi film audience have been fed to a very different kind of entertainment cinema. Only makers like Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani and the new wave directors try something different whereas most of the other Hindi films are on one style of entertainment. Only now films with different themes and stylish presentation have started ushering into Hindi cinema, which I feel, will bring in lot of south directors too. Ram Gopal Verma had tried the same kind of subject like Bhoot before in Raat and Kaun but could not succeed. Now the trend is changing and I feel it’s the time for great south directors to enter the Hindi market.

Q You have been associated with some major blockbuster movie down south. What are the reasons you feel you could not repeat same success in Hindi belt?

I made my film Love with Salman Khan way back in 1991 and Jagruti in 1992 when I had hardly done about three films in south. Love was the remake of my own telugu film Prema that was a 100 days movie. After these two I myself opted not to do Hindi for it was taking lot of time nearly 2 years to complete two films when I was offered lot of telugu and Tamil movies, hence I stopped myself from doing Hindi films, I never had the opportunity to remake my own southern hits nor did I get any good offers. Now Pehlaj Nihlani has offered me a film so also a few more projects are in discussion, I hope it works this time.

Q Speaking in context to Abhay many people have felt that the movie was projecting Kamal Hassan’s versatility to perform rather than film to entertain?’ What went wrong with abhay according to you?

The same Kamal Haasan acted in Nayakan or Appu Raja nobody commented because the film was a success and he was there in the film projecting his versatility as usual. Kamal Haasan is a legend in his life time. People throng to his movies to see him perform and according to me in Abhay he did a brilliant job. There may be many reasons for a film failure, some say the film was hyped too much, some say it was the budget, some say it was too intelligent, but then everyone is liable to their opinions. The film is technically one of the best films in Indian cinema and a script, which was for ahead in its concept. The over expectation sometimes becomes the cause of a disappointment.

Q Do you go to set with a rigid frame of mind to expect what you want to get from your artists or do you give some flexibility to an artist?

I am never rigid in extracting performance from my artists. I just place the actors in the mood of the scene and then guide them to do the best. Strangely I have this reputation that all the stars in my film have acted brilliantly and they have all got awards too. I am a good friend to all my actors.

Q You have worked with two mega stars like Rajnikant and Kamal Haasan? What improvisation you as a director have to make when you reach the sets to work with two stars?

I have worked not with just two mega stars but also with others like Chiranjeevi and Mohan lal too. To be honest you don’t have to improvise too much with them, they are such dedicated actors and so much aware of their performances that all you need is to just place them in that scene and encourage them to give their best, that’s all. I have been extremely lucky to have seen such fantastic actors perform before my eyes. They are sheer magic before the camera and I as an ardent fan of all of them watch in awe.

Q You keep mentioning about God’s Grace, how religious are you?

I am extremely religious and also have a spiritual bent of mind. I owe all that I am today to my Spritual Master Swamiji Sadasiva Bramendra, Gnanacheri, Chennai. He is the guiding light to my family and me. I have been fortunate to have the Blessings of so many Gurus and Saints that many a times I have wondered why God has been so kind to me. Yes its true HIS Benevelonce alone has kept me down to earth even today. Inspite of all the success and still after 15 years and 30 films if I am still in the field is purely HIS Blessings. As the Saints say everything in this life is pre-determined, it’s a screenplay he has written on each individual from the time he came into this world, hence everything will happen as per HIS WILL that’s all! I believe in it 100 per cent!

Q When you look back at your career do you feel you have reached where you belonged?

To be honest, I never even imagined I would be in films Directing Movies. That the South Indian Audiences, producers and actors are still tolerating me even after 15years and over 30 films in itself truly lucky and Gods Grace. Every film I get I keep thanking my stars, for still I do not know what I am doing in films and that too Direction.

Q Was there any other member in your family who was also in films?

My sister Shanthi Krishna was a very popular actress in Tamil and Malayalam films in the early 80s. She was a great Bharat Natyam Dancer and had given more than 500 performances all over the world. Till the time she was around I was only called brother of Shanthi Krishna. In a way her marriage paved the way for my recognition (ha!) She is now married to a big businessman Mr.Bajore and happily settled in the US with her children.

Secret Desire…

All my childhood and youth I was and still am an ardent fan or Amitabh Bachhan. I still have that urge to do direct one film of his. Every time a scene for big heroes would come in my script I would imagine how Amitji would enact that scene and accordingly suggest to the stars. Rajnikantji and Chiranjeeviji, would pull my leg for that. Once a proposal came to remake my film “Master” which I had done with Chiranjeeviji but somehow it did not materialize. Right now among new generation I am an ardent fan of Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and of course my good friend Salman Khan.

Jeshta (Kannada, 2004)

This film brought together the same producer and team of Kadamba to make a family film this time. Music was by S.A.Rajkumar.

Similar to the first film, it was also a remake of a Malayalam film. The story was of a hero and his brothers. It had a gripping screenplay.

Bhathrathiri Ramudu (Telugu, 2004)

Starring grandson of the legendary N.T.Rama Rao, this film had a very unusual script.

It was the story of a simple man who is used by a foreign NRI girl to ward off evil in her marriage astrological chart. How the simpleton Ramudu, goes through to win back his wife, even to the extent of going to Europe, is the crux of the story.

A very interesting plot with some good music.

Kadamba (Kannada, 2004)

I’ve always wanted to work with Vishnuvardhan, a very versatile actor. He is a very stylish actor and has been in the industry for a very long time. Co-starring him was Bhanu Priya, an excellent actress in her own right.

Music was by Deva, produced by Babu, photography by Ramesh Babu.

The film was a take off from old Sivaji Ganesan’s classic “Thangapadakam” and Dilip Kumar’s “Shakthi”. It was a mix of both.

The story revolved around a father, wife and their estranged son. The father, a very honest police officer, often had to fight battles on principle with his own son. The drama also captures the gamut of emotions his wife goes through in the family.

Raghavendra (Telugu, 2003)

The film was produced by G.V.G.Raju and Srinivas Raju with music by Mani Sharma.

Prabhaas, who is a very popular actor today in Andhra Pradesh played the main lead. This was his second film and he gave a very confident performance.

It was a very modern story of a youth with a violent attitude. Due to his reckless temperament his parents put him in an ashram.

It was a very successful film which ran for 100 days in many centres.
