Daddy (Telugu, 2001)
Jun 24th
This film was my second fortunate opportunity to team up with mega star Chiranjeevi. Produced by Geetha arts, Allu Arvind, the producer of the film Master. The film had noteable technicians and people I have worked with before. Story was by Bhoopathy Raja, Dialogues by Satyanand, Music by S.A.Rajkumar and Photography by Chota.K.Naidu.
Chiranjeevi with his brother-in-law Allu Arvind had decided to go for a change of image for the mega star. From the start it was clearly decided that the film would be about a common man, a character called Rajkumar, his love, his marriage and his child. Without any adornments of his star image scenes, it was a cakewalk subject to handle. Writer Bhoopathy came up with an excellent husband, wife and child drama.
Rajkumar, a very rich man, had a school of dance and music. He was also a great choreographer. His only weakness was his friends, for whom he would go out of his way to help. In came Shanthi, a simple middle class girl. An unexpected meeting in a party paves way for their love and soon translates into marriage. They go on to have a beautiful girl daughter in their life. The first six years of marriage was excellent with some lovely moments. Problems arise when Rajkumar in a deal with his friends finds himself cheated and thrown to the streets. Problems compound in his life, when his daughter falls very seriously ill with a heart ailment. In a shocking turn of event the girl dies and Shanthi blames Rajkumar.
The second half of the film has a brilliant twist when the same daughter surfaces to reunite the estranged couple. The film saw some brilliant performances from Chiranjeevi, Simran and the small girl.
It was very well appreciated by critics and ran for 100 days in many centers. But the public just could not appreciate the mega star in such a simple role.
But personally for me, it was a very satisfying film.
Aalavandhan / Abhay (Tamil/Hindi, 2000)

Produced by ‘Kalaipulli’ Dhanu and written by Kamal Haasan himself, it was based on a serial written by Kamalji for one of the Tamil weekly some years ago. It was a brilliant story of two brothers, one an animal and the other a ‘trained’ animal. Kamalji played both the roles himself. He radically altered his physique for one of the brothers even shaving his hair completely. He retained his regular looks for the second brother who is a commando in the film (a.k.a trained animal).
It was technically a difficult film for we wanted to have double role shots, which was never done before in Indian screen. There were motion control cameras from Australia and some fine technicians from India for computer graphics, Madhu and Krishna (they went on to fetch National Award for the same film). Thiru’s photography was fantastic. There were also some very tough jobs for the art director Samir Chanda, for he had to keep recreating the same sets for the double role version.
It is still one of the most acclaimed technical films in my career. Brilliant performance as usual from Kamalji. The film also starred Raveena tendon and Manisha Koirala. Music was by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and fights by Vikram Dharma.
The return of the Thief of Bagdad (English/Telugu, 2000)

This would have been a dream project for any technician. A Hollywood film produced by an Indian producer with great technicians from Hollywood. Both English and Telugu versions were to be made simultaneously, and I was assigned to direct the Telugu version.

Sangamam (Tamil, 1999)

Another of those pre-determined moments in my life! I always wanted to work with the genius Music Director A.R.Rahman. When a call came from Rahman asking me to direct a film for his co brother Rehman, I was overjoyed. I wanted to use this opportunity to work with ARR on challenging subject for both of us. Writer Bhopathy Raja came with a lovely subject of marrying folk music and Bharat Natyam themes.
ARR was extremely happy to hear the subject and thought it would be a great challenge for him as he had only done modern trendy music until then. To do a film combining folk music, successfully popularised by Illayaraja and classical carnatic music, worked upon by veterans such as M.S.Viswanathan and Mahadevan, would be a challenge not for the faint hearted! But then ARR took it up and in my opinion gave one of his best music creations till date in that genre. He kept upto his expectations and bagged many awards and appreciation from both critics and masses.
Vairamuthu the lyricist has always been my favorite. His lovely poetry always helps me picturise the scene beautifully. He bagged the National Award for his work in this film.
Amid all the musical focus, the film was essentially a love-story between a folk singer called Selvam and a bharatnatyam dancer called Abirami. Set in a beautiful rural scene, the film is very close to my heart, for you rarely come across musical subject like this as a Director.
Oruvan (Tamil, 1999)
Jun 24th
Produced by Lakshmi movie-makers, a very big banner in Tamil Nadu.
Sarath Kumar with whom I had already worked in Vedan, was my hero in this film. Pooja Batra, Devayani, Delhi Ganesh, Vivek, Vadivelu, Maninvannan, Raghuvaran, Anand Raj were the others in the cast. Music was by Deva, my favourite music director to work with.
It was a different film for Sarath Kumar, who is generally into action films. It was a story of Surya, played by Sarath Kumar, and an orphan boy called Raja. It was an emotional film set in a typical Chennai flat, with brilliant performances from both Sarath kumar and little boy.
The film was well received by critics but not very much appreciated by the public. It was basically due to the image-changing role for Sarath Kumar. But then he liked the role immensely and gave a very convincing performance of a lonely father with a tragic past finding peace and solace in the little boy.
Aaha (Telugu, 1998)

During the making of Auto driver, Nagarjuna who saw the Tamil version of Aaha was so impressed that he decided to buy the rights of the film and produce it himself in Telugu.
This time it was Jagapathi Babu and Sanghvi, with lovely music by Vande matharam’s, Srinivas.
The film was made with same energy as the tamil version and we all enjoyed it thoroughly. One shot which was one of its kind was brilliantly executed. There was a single shot of 10mts i.e. one full reel – one shot. We had rehearsed from morning and shot it in the evening. Everybody brilliantly executed the scene, in front of and behind the camera!
The film did well. At many places it ran for more than 100 days. It was for this movie that many appreciated me for coming up with a contrasting film from Baasha. An action film in Baasha to a family film in Aaha.
Auto Driver (Telugu, 1998)
Jun 24th
It was my first combination with the handsome actor, Nagarjuna. One of my previous films Baasha had been dubbed into telugu had made it a big hit. Thus with this film expectations soared further.
It was a slightly misleading title for the film even though Nagarjuna was playing an auto driver. It was basically a romantic film. It is a story of an improbable romance between an auto driver Jagan and Shrawani, a Miss India beauty. The movie’s writer Bhopathy Raja has also written a number of my other films.
Personally I liked the manner in which we treated the movie. I thought it would be a success, but then expectations were set so high from me particularly after Baasha, that it went onto be an average box office film.
Nevertheless it was great working with Nagarjuna, I called him the Prince. He was full of grace and style even in day-to-day life. Having his wife Amla, heroine for my earlier film Sathya, sometimes on the set created a nice friendly working atmosphere.
Master (Telugu, 1997)

Finally after all these years, I got the opportunity to work with Mega star of Telugu Industry, Chiranjeevi. The film was written by Bhoopathy Raja.
Produced by Geetha Arts and music by Deva, it is the story of a professor working in a college run by bunch of wayward students controlled by an underworld don called J.K. Rajkumar (Chiranjeevi), is brought in by the principal to save the scene. How he brings about reformation in the college and wins the heart of all students is the basis of the film. Chiranjeevi proved once again why he is a mega star! Chiranjeevi’s ease of performance, the manner in which he did his fights and danced brilliantly went on to prove why he’s so popular with the masses.
Aaha (Tamil, 1997)
Jun 24th
Produced by Goodnight Mohan of Shogun Films, it starred a new cast of actors in lead roles of the film. Music was by Deva and dialogues by ‘Crazy’ Mohan.
It was a fun film, a family entertainer, set within the backdrop of a typical Brahmin upper class family.
It’s portrays the growing generation gap between an old fashioned father and today’s modern youth. Throughout the film, the father ‘Pepsi’ Parusuram, never comes to terms with his young son Sriram and keeps abusing him to be a good-for-nothing fellow. Sriram strangely also has a knack of being at the wrong place at the wrong time, and many a time takes the blame of others on himself. Thus he makes his father hate him more.
In one such instance, Sriram takes his elder brother, Raghu’s serious blame upon himself and puts a brave face facing a tragedy to save his sister’s marriage. Parusuram who hated his youngest son so much transforms to love him the most. He understands that behind the modern outlook of today’s youth there lies a heart of a good human being. Finally it becomes an eye opener for the father and the whole family on the verge of collapse, to reunite.
I received the best comment from Super star Rajnikant. He said, “Suresh, forget your films like Baasha, Annamalai, Sathya and others, Aaha is your masterpiece”. He was so excited for me. I would always cherish those words. Thank you Rajni Sir.
Shiva Shakti (Tamil, 1996)
Jun 24th
Starring two popular actors Sathyaraj and Prabhu, for the first time, it was a well-mounted film of two friends. Shiva (played by Sathyaraj), had a mission to get back to his parents village lost to the hands of terrorists. Shakti (played by actor Prabhu), befriends Shiva as a good friend only to reveal later he was a policeman on undercover.
As Shakti comes closer to Shiva, he realises that Shiva is a good person and has a noble mission. A twist in the story enfolds and Shakti faces a dilemma of choosing between being a policeman on one side and his close friend on the other. Shiva is shocked later to know that his dear friend Shakti was in fact a policeman with underlying intentions. A terrific drama ensues from there.
Brilliant performances from lead actors and brilliant action sequences were highlights of the film.
